Slidin’ and Spinnin’ in Wilsall, Montana - Yellowstone Slide I Results

The season-opening $5,300 Yellowstone Slide I set the dirt a blazin’ at Anderson Training Stables in Wilsall, Mont., with some sizzling runs from open and non pro riders alike.
Summer-like weather graced the three-day event put on by the Yellowstone Reining Horse Association, which started Thursday May 28 with a full slate of club classes followed by two days of NRHA and Ancillary classes. Judge Richard Pokluda of Whitesboro, Tex., presided over the event and riders from Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and the Dakotas strutted their stuff for a chance to win prizes, cash and bronzes – and to stake their claim to places in the standings for the Intermountain Regional Affiliate finals at summer’s end. More than 350 entries kept the judge, scribes and Show Secretary busy.
Club classes set the tone for the weekend. Schooling was the goal of the day in most of the club classes, but there were some outstanding runs and lots of tracks were laid down and lines drawn in the dirt for the competition to come. By the next morning, riders and horses were rarin’ to compete, figuratively speaking, and compete they did for the next two days.
Bill Campbell marked the high score of the weekend with a 73 aboard Wright On Broadway owned by Linda Hahn, to lead the Open and Intermediate Open. Hot on his heels came Dave Leithead riding I Wish I Were A Chic owned by Sonja Myrstol and Jarvis Anderson riding The Whizards Magic owned by the Double D Ranch/Elise Donohue.
Carol Sue Chudy rounded up the Non Pro competition riding Ritzy Red Pine to a score of 72 to win the Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro classes. Jackie Sorenson marked a 71 on Roosters Toddy for the reserve champion spot in the Non Pro and Billi Grace Heigh’s 71.5 on Count The Numbers secured her the reserve slot in the Non Pro Intermediate.
Crowd pleasing classes during the Yellowstone Slide I included the Freestyle and PeeWee Reining. Five 11 & under riders competed in the PeeWee Reining, held at the noon break on Saturday. The wee future reiners performed alone and with parents/grandparents in front of a cheering crowd. Each rider received a purple ribbon and plaque from event organizer Anne Kent.
